Rigamaroll

You ever notice how when things are going to go awry they will do so at the most inopportune time?

I've been house-sitting for my Mom and Dad while they've been visiting my sister in Saskatchewan. They have a little black cat named Gypsy whose been getting lonelier and lonelier the longer my parents have been away. As soon as I open the door, Gypsy comes running and meowing to me. Hee-hee!

Yesterday, I was really busy and didn't head out to my parent's until about 8:00pm. I climbed into my car, but when I tried to start it, nothing happened. Great. Mike's gone, my parents are gone, and I know NOTHING about cars.

The clouds were gathering and I knew I had to bike over to my Mom and Dad's for their little cat. But I really, really, didn't want to bike over given the impending doom that was happening overhead. I pedaled on over and the rain held off. Spent some time with Gypsy and then at 9:00pm, I heard rain start to fall. SHIT! Not again!

I've biked more in the rain this year than in my entire life!

Made it home and arranged to have the mechanic look at my car this morning. Called the local tow truck dude (I have CAA) to arrange for him to take my car over in the morning. Verdict? Everything was hunky dory -- I just needed a new battery. If my Dad or Mike were here, they would have taken care of it, but I ain't no Daddy or boyfriend, and I don't have a clue - so I'm just happy my car is working again.

I gave my mechanic an $8.00 tip and he told me, "You gave me too much money." I told him it was a tip and I appreciated him taking care of my car so quickly -- besides I'd rather tip my mechanic than some putz waiter/waitress. I do the same for my hairdresser -- tip the people who really SHOULD be tipped! Anyways, my mechanic was surprised and grateful, and said he doesn't get tips very often. :)

I have today off, and then tomorrow I head up to Calgary for the race. I'm pretty much packed and ready to go! Can't wait to see a lot of you all! :) :)

Training Day Race

The nasty cold that hit me right after GWN has FINALLY left me, and I've spent the last week slowly getting back into the grove of things. UGH -- It's amazing how hard it is to swim after two weeks off!

SO, the goals for the Calgary 70.3 are this: use it as a training race and a way to bump up my fitness from the two weeks lost. :) I can do that!

Not much has been going on -- I had a bike ride to do, but I waited around until noon yesterday wondering if it was going to rain. I left at exactly 12:00pm, and had gone about 5km, when the rain finally came. LOL -- Wonderful!! Every time!! Hahahahaha!!

I'm glad I took arm warmers and my sexy bright neon yellow cycling shell. I laughed at myself when I bought that thing -- I mean, the last time I bought anything of that colour was 1986, but hey, visibility is a big thing, right? Hahahahaha!

Today, I had a good 4000m swim with a main workout that got me movin' again! In between sets, I positioned my body around this jet of water -- free massage. Hee-hee!! Have you ever watched when a water jet in the pool hits your leg? It is pretty gross -- the pressure of the water pushes your skin so it's flapping like a dog's lips when they hang their head out a fast moving vehicle.

Ah yes, I know -- this is why I haven't been blogging -- really. I truly have NOTHING else to say! Hahahahahaha!!

Happy training everyone! I know I'm happy to be back at it! :) :)

Emerging From the Darkness...

All the traveling and training I'd been doing finally caught up with me on the drive back from Stony Plain. I've spent the last week fighting the good fight and horking many, many loogies in the process. 8 bowls of chicken soup and 4 boxes of Kleenex later...I went for an easy swim today! YAY!!!

Chicken salad I forced myself to eat because I knew it was good for me...although all I wanted to do was dive into something greasy and fat and something that would have made me feel ten times worse.

Still not 100%, but am getting better every day. :) :) :)

My new purple snuggle bear -- My Mom came by to drop him off. He's helped me get better! :) :)

GWN Race Report

NICE!! Hahahahahahaha!!

This bloody blister was my special surprise at the very end of the race -- I never even knew I had it until I stared in blinking disbelief as I took my sock off. I guess all those mental tricks I used during the race paid off. :) :) (I keep wiggling my toes in front of Mike inviting him to touch the blister -- hahahahaha!)

ANYWAYS....New PB alert!!! 5:13:45!! YAY!!!

Onto a down and dirty race report...

Swim

I positioned myself right near the front. (I know, I'm nuts, but I like to be in the thick of things. Hee-hee!) Let's just say I never ran out of company for the entire swim -- I bumped, groped, jostled, sputtered and had the same thing done to me. If you raced GWN on Sunday, you wouldn't be able to say you were lonely during the swim. :)

The turn at the first buoy was hilarious --- everyone came to a grinding halt. You couldn't swim because everyone was bobbing upright like apples in a tub. I bobbed up and down along with everyone else and the sheer force of people behind us pushed everyone around the buoys at which point everyone got busy swimming again. It was so much fun, I felt like I was on a waterslide! Hahahahahahaha!! Too bad, I couldn't have bobbed up and down while being pushed forward for the entire swim -- that would be a new swimming tactic, eh? LOL!!

T1

I had decided before the race that I would bypass the wetsuit strippers and take off my own wetsuit to save time. You see, at the Penticton training camp, I had practiced this over and over again and I was quite confident that I could do it quickly...

The only trouble was I couldn't whip the darn thing off my feet because the timing chip strap caught on my wetsuit. I struggled for a bit but managed to yank the wetsuit off without sitting on my bum which is a major triumph for me. :) :)

Next thing I knew, I couldn't find my bike. Ahh well, I knew that sometimes a little disorientation isn't anything to panic about, so I took a big breath and got back on track. I put my socks and bike shoes on (again, without sitting on the ground! HURRAH for training camps!) and got busy with my bike. :)

Bike

I had a great, great bike ride. :) I had just installed the new Profile water bottle -- you know the one with a lid? I was so excited about the prospect of not having crap spilled all over my bike... However, it was not meant to be. Alas, that damn lid splashes just as much water as the good ole yellow sponge. In fact, the lid was WORSE.

You see, there's a foam-like insert in the middle of the lid. It sort of looks like the plastic lid of a McDonald's cup. You know that "x" slashed opening you poke your straw through? Like that. Well, the trouble with this lid is that the foamy insert provides just that little bit of extra resistance to a water bottle nipple pressed against it.

Picture it -- concentrated mixture of Carbo Pro and Nuun trying to be squirted into Profile water bottle. The foamy insert halfway closes the water bottle causing ensuing spillage EVERYWHERE. It didn't matter how hard I squirted my water bottle, the stream wouldn't get in the Profile bottle unless I stuck my finger in the top to open it up so to speak. Thus, electrolyte and carb drink pooled around the lid and flew off in every direction saturating me, my bike, and anyone unlucky enough to be around me.

The other crappy thing about the Profile lid was that the water I grabbed from the aid stations were in wide mouthed plastic milk jug things. When I approached an aid station, I had to undo the Profile lid (it's hinged to the bottle) and hold it open while I poured water in. CRIKEY!! Hahahahahaha!

At 70km into the bike, I started to really push myself. I was using this mental trick I had learned an hour before the race -- I kept saying to myself, "I'm not biking, I'm not biking." I thought of lying in bed at the hotel room relaxing in front of the tube. Then, every once in a while when I could feel the wind, or a little incline appeared, I would GROWL and then pedal away.

I'm not kidding -- I don't know how this growling came about but it worked. :) I would zone in on a new target to pass, would grit my teeth, wrinkle my nose and go "GRRRR!" Then, I would have this spurt of energy. I know one time I was Grrrr-ing and this poor woman who was spectating on the side of the road probably thought, "What the hell?" Hahahahahahaha!!!

Well, I'm not one to question any method that works. So, I Grrrr-ed my way all to the finish and into T2.

Run

T2 was in a different place than T1 -- one of THOSE races. Hahahahahaha!! You had to yell your number and then all these volunteers would yell back and forth at each other waving their arms at you to show you where you had to park your bike and hopefully find your bag with running shoes. Hahahahaha!! I had to run way the heck down the road and all I was thinking of was another lesson I learned at camp -- restrict the amount of walking you do on your cleats because they wear away very quickly. I thought of all the times I carefully strained my feet walking on my heels to protect my cleats. The thoughts that go through your head eh? Hahahahahahaha!

I had the BEST run so far in a triathlon. I actually ended up only 2 minutes slower than the half-mary I ran in May, so I was soooooo excited. I think I held the same pace throughout -- my nutrition was bang on, and I was thrilled to start passing people at about 15km into the run. The last 5km were awesome -- I was hurting, but I used the same tactic I had used during the bike, thinking to myself, "I'm not running, I'm not running."

I also thought of the running drills we learned at the Penticton camp, and all the advice and feedback I had received about my running form. Running light, running quietly, all these things popped into my head. I used every single thing I could think of to keep on trucking forward.

The run has ALWAYS been the worst part of a tri for me, but I was feeling really strong and good for once!! There was one girl in a pink top just ahead of me that I never could quite catch, but she was like my carrot. If it wasn't for her, I don't know if I would have been able to push myself so much. :) :) I finished about 10 seconds behind her, and after I congratulated her, I thanked her for helping me run my best race so far. She was so cute and said, "My pleasure!" :) :) :) :)

As usual, I saw so many of my friends and fellow competitors out on the course, none of whom I cheered for -- and all of whom cheered loudly for me. This is a big embarrassment to me, but I just can't seem to find the mojo to cheer when I race or even when I train hard. SO....Once again, Thank you so much NICK, TESSA, CAROLYN, ERIN (you always are so perky and awesome!) for cheering even as you were all working so hard! Big hugs to you Nick!! Frig, one of these days, I'm just going to cheer all day long at one of your races to make up for all these times. Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

The icing on the cake was passing one girl in the last km of the race! I was so pumped -- I was feeling strong. :) :) When I heard my friend Susi scream and cheer as I approached the last little incline before turning toward the finish line, I gathered up more strength and targeted this poor dude in front me. You have to turn to the right and run down the block to get to the finish, so I "champed it up" (Man, I love that phrase! hahahahaha!) passed him on the inside and ran to the finish.

As I was running, I saw the clock was at 5:13 and I decided I was going to get under that clock before it ticked over to 5:14. Wheeee!! And I did!! :) :) :) :)

BIG hugs to Jenna and her children, Chiara and Alex. Jenna -- I most definitely heard you at the swim exit and out on the bike course. THANK YOU so much for screaming your head off!!! That energy really helps! :) :)

So, here are the times --

Swim: 36:17
Bike: 2:47:30
Run: 1:49:59

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

A BIG humongous thank you to my coach, Sara. You are such an amazing coach and person -- thank you for mentoring me and showing me I know NOTHING about triathlon and very little about myself...because it is this knowledge (or lack thereof, heh-heh) that has been the catalyst for me pushing through my own self-imposed limitations. Now don't get me wrong here people, my coach doesn't stand around and tell me "You know NOTHING, fool!" On the contrary -- the training she has me doing is personalized FOR ME and it is through this training I have learned I am capable of more than I thought.

Thanks again Sara for your friendship, mentorship, and coach-ship. Hee-hee!!!

Very quick update!

Hey all!

I just got back from Penticton this afternoon and am busy unpacking and repacking right now. We are off to Mike's parent's cabin in Windermere, and then I'll be heading up to Stony Plain on Friday.

Still alive!

Training camp was UNFRICKING-BELIEVABLE. My roomie and I napped (read: collapsed into bed) every afternoon so we'd have the energy to attack the next workout. POOPED!!! :) :)

I'll update when I have some more time...

:) :) :)

Fruit Snacks, Julie-style!

esterday, my good friends, Cath and Jason stopped by. Cath and I headed out for a hilly bike ride, while Mike and Jase drank coffee and bought tools at the local hardware shop! Hahahahahahaha!!

I was so excited to be done with our bike ride because I had planned a special surprise for my buds...

Now over the years, Cath and Jase would stop by our place en route from Calgary to Fernie. Often times, they would be exhausted from the flight from London and arrived at my humble abode ravenous.

It is with great pride that I take sole credit for introducing my English friends to the wonder and joy of Hamburger Helper. Hahahahahahaha!!

Poor Jase is quite the cook, and I remember the look on his face when he took the first bite and said, "Well that's quite tasty." LMAO!!! I can only imagine how hungry he must have been. Hee-hee!

Well, it's been a running joke with us now, I always say I'll be making Hamburger Helper, would they like to come for dinner?

Yesterday, however, I was inspired by a creation my friend Charmaine and I had busied ourselves with the day before. I helped her prepare this dish for her daughter's birthday party and was so excited by it, I HAD to make it for Jason and Cath.

As I was preparing it, I started giggling to myself because I knew how awesome it would be and how surprised Jason would be. Mike was in the other room and came over to see what I was laughing about -- and then he just shook his head and started laughing.

Are you ready?????

First I created my masterpiece -- the Watermelon Basket!!!

Then, you chop up all kinds of fruit to make fruit kabobs. Top with a strawberry dipped in chocolate. (See how gleeful I am! Hahahahaha! I already donned my cycling jersey and shorts so I wouldn't be worried about getting ready for the bike ride...)

Final step: Load some skewers in the basket and place extras around it. Hee-hee!!

I swore Mike to secrecy and made him promise that he wouldn't tell Jason about the surprise until Cath and I returned. :) I even covered the whole thing in foil to hide it from prying eyes if anyone went into the fridge.

Mike kept his promise and I was just about wriggling with excitement to get home and serve my watermelon basket!! Hahahahahaha!! I giggled to myself as I brought out the tray of fruit kabobs. They promptly disappeared, but I realized afterward that I should have made something else. Poor Jason was still ravenous -- I could tell by the sharp glean in his eyes. I should have whipped up a batch of Hamburger Helper after all, eh? Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

Well, I'm off to Penticton tomorrow for a training camp -- I'll be gone 10 days! YAY!!! I am so excited for this camp and the opportunity to learn a ton and gain more fitness. :) :)

I'm going to be sharing a room with another of Sara's athletes -- Tessa. I first met Tessa when I was at the Arizona training camp, but never got to know her that well...That situation was rectified this weekend however!

Tessa also raced at Wasa and we accidentally met up on Saturday -- I was standing in the outhouse line wearing my bathing suit, and Tessa must have recognized my bum from Arizona because I heard her voice yell, "Julie!" Hahahahahahaah!!

I invited her to bunk with me at a motel in Cranbrook to cut costs and she agreed. You never know just how well you are going to get along with someone however....I KNEW we were two peas in a pod when at dinner, we each placed our respective lip balms on the table at the same time. Hahahahaha!!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend...

Keith -- GO LIKE A ROCKET!! You have a solid game plan. Once you are out of the swim, pedal like you mean it. Solid and strong. Run the entire course -- even if that means running at a pace barely discernible from walking, you CAN DO IT!!! As my friend Kerry tells me, "Lay down the law!" :) :) :) :) :)

Susi -- Have a great, great race! Strong and steady the whole way my dear!!! :) :)

Shannon -- Good luck and make sure you poop before you start the run!! Hahahaha!! No walking allowed even if that means you are clenching butt cheeks! LMAO!!!

Is there anyone else I missed? If I did, tell me, and I will personally wish you good luck as well!

GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!

Wasa Olympic Race Report

Here is the down and dirty race results: 2:25:12, but the swim was screwed up and 250m short I think. 5th in age group, 23rd woman overall, and this other lady beat me by 4 SECONDS!!! Hahahahah -- More on that later...

The venue changed for the tri this year due to the explosive number of entrants. My eyes just about bugged out of my head when I saw how MASSIVE transition was. As my Dad would say, "Holy-Oh Crap!" :) :) :)

This was the first race where I actually knew a LOT of people. A huge chunk of my Arizona training group were there as well as other buds -- I even ran into my high school French teacher!! Go figure! Hahahahaha!

The water was so warm this year, I even felt a bit hot in my wetsuit if you can believe it. Normally the water is freezing cold...Okay onto the race itself...

SWIM
The men had their own wave start about 15 minutes or so ahead of the women. What a nice change -- swimming with a bunch of women is a much more enjoyable experience than having to deal with testosterone flailing and punching men. Nobody rammed you on purpose, nobody tried to swim over top of you -- what a relaxing time it was! :) :)

Swim time (remember it is not a true 1500m): 23:18

BIKE -- 1:11:51
My legs felt terrible for about 15km of the bike ride. Just really fatigued and heavy. I just did what I could and knew that the time to push what little I had would be in the final 20km when the wind would be blowing hard against us. As the course had changed from last year, I was totally surprised when the 20km turn around appeared -- I just about fell off my bike...literally.

I was pushing a big gear and was just passing this girl and a man when I saw a placard in the middle of the road and people sitting in lawn chairs behind it. SHIT!! I had no time to shift into an easier gear, so I just slammed on the brakes and turned in slow motion around the corner. I actually unclipped just in case I couldn't make the turn -- it was that close.

As soon as I made the turn (YES!) I said to the two people I had just about taken out, "Sorry guys, I didn't realize the turn around was right there!" The man was a total dick -- he said, "I can turn my motorcycle faster than that." I thought to myself, "You a$$hole, you're just mad that you are getting chicked." The woman said to me, "I don't mind! It's OK!" What a difference in attitudes eh?

At this point, I had my cycling legs back and I just went as hard as I could. It was awesome, I felt great biking as hard as I could into the wind.

When I got into transition, someone had put their bike in my place (That's the THIRD time this has happened to me at this race), so I just laid my bike down on the fence and grabbed my running stuff.

RUN -- 50:05
All the girls I had passed on the bike very promptly passed me on the run, but I felt good with my effort. A friend of mine, Erin (another Arizona pal) was yelling at me to "Dig Deep!" and "Push hard!" Bless you Erin -- you have no idea how much that helped me get through the run -- I wish I had the energy (and the breath!) to shout encouragement back to you!!! :) :) :) :)

Here comes the major dorkiness part. Nearing the end of the run, there were two people in front of me that I could not get by. It wasn't because they were going faster than I could, it was because the spectators lined both sides of the narrow path, making it impossible to pass. I think one was a part of a relay, the other maybe part of a relay too -- in any case, for all I know it might have been their very first tri and they were both soaking in the atmosphere. There were all these kids lined up along the path and these two people were giving high fives as they ran -- at least at this point, I had the presence of mind not to plow over some poor kid to get by.

OH MAN, but here comes the bad part....

I had energy left and I wanted to get by these two people SOOOO BAD. There was just NO room to pass until the very end --- and I mean like the last 5 meters before the finish line. A tiny opening appeared between the two people and darted in between and around them to get ahead! OH MY GOD I AM SUCH A DORK!!! My very good friends, Cath and Jase were there cheering me on, and Jase captured the moment on film -- you can see the look of disgust on the spectators' faces at the stunt I pulled!! And you can see the guy and the girl I managed to squeak by.

Page 2 « Lake Wasa Triathlon It is the first picture on the left hand side of the post.

LMAO!!!! If there is anyone who will understand this -- it will be Chad!! Remember you and your precious seconds that separated you from 3rd place last year? Well, 4 freaking seconds separated me from 22nd overall!! HAHAHAHAHAH!!! Yes, I have turned into the total tri dork, and I would do it all over again if I had the chance.

LMAO!!!!!!!

My friend Charmaine was bugging me saying, I might as well try to take out the guy in the wheelchair while I'm at it....EEEEEEP!!!!!!!

Even with the screwed up swim, I still shaved off time from what I did at Lethbridge last month, so I'm pretty tickled at that.

Lesson of the race? Go ahead -- Embrace your inner dork! LOL!!!!
